Last month I took a cruise up Alaska's Inside Passage. Each day at dawn I'd be on the deck ready to catch another moment of the ever-changing show. I saw whales breaching, eagles soaring, dolphins and otters playing, heard the thunder of glaciers breaking off into ice flows, and felt the gentle rocking of the ship as pristine mountains glided by. It seemed that my inner landscape was woken up and enlivened by the beauty outside me. Or... was it the other way around? Travel offers an invitation to explore, open our minds and refresh our spirit. The question is how do we stay open and refreshed in our everyday living? Here is a simple practice that helps me to make everything new. In the morning, as soon as you awaken, bring your awareness to your inner landscape. Notice your breathing, any sensation in your body, and your thoughts. Do your best to observe without judging. Then let go of this awareness as you move into your day. A little later - say when you brush your teeth - bring your attention to sensation: Feel the brush against teeth and gums, the temperature of the water, your hand holding the brush, and your feet on the floor. Then let go and return to your habitual way of doing things. When you arrive at work, be present to opening a door, sitting in your chair, and pushing a button to turn on your computer. And let it go. Continue throughout your day to take these little mini awareness vacations. Spend no more than 30 seconds each time you do this practice. Be grateful when you remember, and forgive yourself when you forget. You can always start again. Notice what begins to happen. What I find is -- I tap into that exquisite pleasure and joy I experienced while I was in Alaska. ~ Linda |
