Transform does not mean to fix or make go away past trauma or hurt; instead, you develop a new relationship with your difficulty, so it is no longer a controlling factor in your life.

Recover Your Life

Last Sunday was Mother’s Day. For many it was a time to celebrate the mothers in our lives. For those of us who are mother-less, it may have been a bitter sweet time. For me Mother’s Day was an opportunity to reflect on all I’ve gained from the loss of my mother.

When I was thirty, my mother took her life. She was fifty seven, lived alone, had a business which was failing, and felt that life was against her. Consumed by anxiety and overwhelmed by fear, she chose the only way she believed would bring her peace. She was also an addict. Though she abused prescription drugs, alcohol, and credit cards, I believe that her deepest addiction was to suffering. She left me with the legacy that women cannot support themselves, let alone run a successful business, and that life is hard and full of problems. And, if it gets too hard, you can take your life.

In the last twenty four years I have been on a journey to recover my life. I have walked in my mother’s shoes - experiencing anxiety, depression and the fear of being alone - and I have confronted my use of substances to run from the pain. And I’ve come through to the other side. I have discovered that life is not against me - it has always been on my side. The only thing I have needed to leave behind is the story that life is a struggle.

What I’ve come to see is that what is perceived as a problem is actually an invitation to look within. When we take the time to meet a challenge at its source - inside us - we’re able to shift our perception, discover who we really are, and access more power and joy than we could possibly imagine.

Today my passion is to pass on what I’ve learned as I mentor business women, especially women recovering from addictions. I get to listen, offer presence, and help them access their inner strength as they find their own answers. When they come up against a problem or challenge, I invite them to experience the power of looking within. Each time they recognize and shift a story that hurts, they not only heal themselves, they also help undo the legacy of suffering that has harmed so many women. As we discover the joy of dissolving struggle and meeting life on life’s terms, we connect with the resourceful and wildly creative mother within ourselves.
