Do you ever tell yourself "I should have done it better or said it differently"? Could you be torturing yourself with the story of regret? Each time we recall a past 'mistake' and blame ourselves for not handling it better, we harm ourselves. As don Miguel Ruiz says in The Four Agreements*, we, as humans, are the only species that pay a thousand times for just one mistake. Using our memory, we remember one incident from our past. Then we judge ourselves, find ourselves guilty and punish ourselves - over and over again. Caught in this cycle of self-recrimination, we miss the opportunity to be present and available to what is in front of us in this moment. When we dwell on a story from the past we are more likely to re-enact exactly what we want to avoid! So how do we stop? Here's a way we can apply the fourth agreement, "Always Do Your Best", to shift this painful pattern: Recall an incident when you said or did something that you still regret. Perhaps you spoke unkindly to a colleague, friend or your child. Maybe you didn't follow through on a commitment. Using the power of your imagination, replay the scene in your mind as if you're watching a movie of your life. Watch what you say or do and notice how your action impacts you and those around you. Now pause, breathe and ask yourself, "Is it possible that in that situation, given who I was and what I knew at the time, I was doing my best? Is it possible that, in that moment, I didn't know any other way to be?" When you shift your perspective, you may find that you can finally forgive yourself and let go. With that, there's space to lovingly see the lesson you needed to learn and be happy in this moment. Try it out, and let me know what you discover. ~ Linda |
