I'd like to open up a conversation with you - my readers - about spirit in business. Below is my perspective. What is yours? Feel free to email us back your insights and questions and we'll post some of your letters anonymously (with my replies) in the next issue. Bringing spirit into the workplace is becoming a widely-discussed and controversial topic. For managers, this may conjure up a vision of employees taking time during the work day to meditate, pray or do yoga - and slack off on their responsibilities. Some executives equate spirituality with self-reflection, relaxation and even worse, slowing down - the opposite of optimal performance and productivity. They assume that success requires that they, and their employees, work at an all-consuming pace, regardless of the stress it causes to themselves and others. When they go to work, they leave their spiritual "inner-self" behind. I believe that what people truly long for is to integrate their inner self into their outer world, especially at work. Many successful business leaders are beginning to recognize that re-connecting with spirit actually enhances their capacity to be authentic and present in each moment, clearly see the big picture, and be more on top of their game. Clients usually hire me not because they're unsuccessful, but because success is taking a toll on their personal lives. They may be losing focus and direction, and the relentless pressure of "being on" may be starting to manifest in physical symptoms, difficulty sleeping, or acting out with substances or unhealthy behavior. Yet they're afraid to slow down, and even as they sense they're approaching burn-out, they work harder. They may also be experiencing isolation, a sense of being out-of-control, frustration, and underlying unhappiness. I believe that these symptoms are the inner self crying out for help. Through coaching, my clients learn to listen to this voice, and with that, come back into balance, restore their sense of purpose and joy, and increase their productivity! There are many ways clients can access their unique spirit. Sometimes we begin a session with guided meditation to help them ground into the moment and lay a strong foundation for what follows. Then, as they speak, I listen closely for the voice of their inner knowing, which is often buried under layers of self-doubt, criticism and fear. For example, when they are addressing a problem, I guide them to become aware of any negative or self-defeating thoughts so they can shift into a perspective that is closer to the truth, and usually more positive, resilient, and energizing. They discover that the problem may actually open a doorway to their inner self - inviting them to see a new and more effective solution. Another way to reconnect with their spirit is through visioning. Early in our partnership I coach people to envision how they want their business and life to look, and what they need to access within themselves in order to make that happen. For some, especially those recovering from an addiction, this can be the first time they've really explored what gives their life meaning and purpose. When they uncover what truly matters to them, they tap into a sense of power and purposeful direction that leads to a higher level of performance than they've achieved before. My passion is to integrate spirit into every aspect of my life and mentor others to connect to their own understanding of spirit. As we stay steady with this commitment, success expands to encompass not only financial gain, but also a life of fulfillment, balance and joy. ~Linda |
